The School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin seeks to appoint a temporary Specialist Clinician in Large Animal Surgery. The duration of the appointment is for 36 months.
The UCD Veterinary Hospital has state of the art equipment including CT, MRI, ultrasound, interventional radiology, endoscopy and arthroscopy, laser, and fully equipped surgical suites. Ancillary support includes rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The Section of Equine Clinical Studies, Diagnostic Imaging and Anaesthesia currently has capacity for 15 Clinical Academics/Specialist Clinicians including three large animal surgery, four anaesthesia, four diagnostic imaging, one equine internal medicine and one equine reproduction specialists. There are also two staff members engaged in providing an ambulatory equine field service. These staff are supported by a full team of interns (rotating and discipline specific), residents and ancillary staff.
The successful candidate will contribute effectively to the Section and the UCD Veterinary Hospital and in particular, will participate fully in undergraduate (clinical) teaching, in postgraduate residency training, and in the Large Animal Surgery Service provided by the Hospital. It is anticipated that the above duties will constitute approximately 80% of the appointee’s efforts with the remaining 20% dedicated to other scholarly activity.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be an active team player in the large animal surgical service
- Supervision and clinical training of Doctoral students/ECVS resident training.
- The appointee will contribute as a member of the Section and School committees to the successful functioning of the organization.
- Develop and participate in Continuing Professional Development activities for veterinary practitioners.
- To contribute to the further development of the highest standards of professional and clinical practice in the UCD Veterinary Hospital and ensure compliance with all aspects of relevant legislation/registration.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Line Management.
Salary: €105,000 - €115,000 non-scale
Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

Mandatory:
Experience and Qualifications
- A Veterinary Degree registerable with the Veterinary Council of Ireland.
- A specialist qualification in Veterinary Surgery, namely the European College of Veterinary Surgery Diploma (DipECVS) or Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVS Equine Surgery).
- Clinical experience in Large Animal/Equine surgery, ideally within an academic environment.
- Experience in supervision of residents or interns.
- Genuine interest in and enthusiasm for teaching and learning.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Candidates must demonstrate how they can positively contribute to fostering an inclusive environment and a level of awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable:
- A post-graduate doctoral qualification obtained or currently enrolled.
- Proven ability to self-motivate and motivate others.
- A track record of professional activities relevant to large animal surgery.
- Some experience of equine dental treatments
