Who Are We?

We are a rapidly growing referral centre with Specialists in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Oncology, Dermatology and Ophthalmology.

We provide Surgical assessments, diagnostics and treatment for over 60 local GP clinics. Staffed by fabulous, highly experienced vets and nurses, we pride ourselves in maintaining a close-knit team, while providing exceptional service. We aim to make our clients feel that their pet is as important to us, as it is to them.

About the Role

Collaboration is our middle name and you will work alongside all departments to deliver the best possible patient outcomes. With in-house fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, computed tomography and in-house radiologists, our hospital is well equipped with the toys you would expect from a specialist and referral hospital. We have access to external MRI, as well as an additional cage-side mobile x-ray unit for those patients too critical to move, ventilators, a full surgical suite (with 4 theatres) and a full in-house laboratory.

This role is varied and rewarding, with a caseload comprising both first‑opinion referrals and internal referrals from our ECC team, working within a truly multidisciplinary environment. Our surgical team operates primarily during routine hours, Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

There is also the opportunity, if of interest, to spend some time working on the road through The Pet Specialists mobile service; alternatively, the position can be 100% based within the hospital.

Practice with Autonomy and Impact:

  • Real control over protocol development and service evolution. Many Specialists would like more influence but feel blocked by corporate bureaucracy. We offer freedom to implement gold-standard protocols, R&D or clinical innovation support and pathways to build new services.
  • Specialist-to-intern ratios of 2:1, to ensure that you never carry the caseload (or paperwork) alone.
  • Specialist to surgical resident ratio of 3:2 ensuring a team-based approach to cases with up-to-date, evidence-based care and specialist oversight. Our residents are skilled at providing exceptional continuity of care, monitoring and communication with clients.
  • A hospital that protects wellbeing and prevents fatigue. We have a one in three weekend duty with residents and our ECC team acting as frontline clinicians, triaging emergencies, initiating diagnostics and stabilising patients before involving specialists.

Our Offer

The Pet Specialists are working towards becoming the Employer of Choice amongst the specialist hospitals of Sydney. We strive to promote a healthy work environment and have a strong focus on overall wellness. We provide a range of in-house and external CPD learning opportunities and truly wish to see every one of our employees reach their career goals.

With generously tailored packages and excellent benefits, we have something for everyone, based on your experience and requirements. We are very fortunate to be partnered with Northside Emergency Veterinary Services (NEVS) who operate out of the same building after hours. Their amazing team look after our patients, so we can go home and be re-energised for the next shift.

About You

You hold a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or equivalent veterinary degree registrable in NSW, and are Board‑certified or Board‑eligible in Small Animal Surgery, or eligible for Specialist Registration in Australia. Recognised specialist qualifications include Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVS) in Surgery, Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS), or Diplomate status with the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).

You are collaborative, patient‑focused, and value evidence‑based medicine, professional autonomy, and working within a supportive, multidisciplinary specialist team.

If applicable, support is available to assist with visa application and Australian Veterinary Registration.
