Residency Training Programs
The School of Veterinary Medicine, Murdoch University is pleased to offer the following Residency Training Programs:
- Anaesthesia (starting July 2026)
- Oncology (starting July 2026)
- Small Animal Internal Medicine (starting January 2027)
These three-year, full-time residency programs allow a successful candidate to target credential requirements for speciality certification in the ECVAA (Anaesthesia), ANZCVS (Veterinary Oncology) or ECVIM-CA (Internal Medicine), respectively. The residencies are supervised by board-certified academic staff. Concurrent completion of a Research Masters with Training (RMT) is required through part-time enrolment, allowing additional training in research methodology, and formal recognition of the research embedded in residency training. Applicants should have a demonstrable interest and relevant experience in their chosen field. For Anaesthesia and Small Animal Internal Medicine programs, completion of a one-year traineeship/internship is required.

The Small Animal Internal Medicine section at TAHMU offers specialist referral services for dogs and cats, utilising state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques and equipment, including video endoscopy, ultrasonography, digital radiography, CT, MRI, electrocardiography, and an on-site laboratory. Collaborating with specialist colleagues in oncology, dermatology, surgery, critical care, clinical pathology, imaging, and anaesthesia, we adopt a multidisciplinary approach for holistic and patient-centred care. As a resident, you will have primary case responsibility across a diverse range of internal medicine cases, to fulfil the case log requirements of the ECVIM-CA (Internal Medicine), under the direct supervision of specialists in this field.
The Oncology section at The Animal Hospital offers a structured residency training program designed to meet the requirements for Fellowship of the ANZCVS in Veterinary Oncology. The service predominantly manages small animal oncology cases, with opportunities for supervised involvement in selected large animal cases through collaborative clinical activities. The resident will work under the direct supervision of a registered ANZCVS Fellow in Oncology and alongside postgraduate trainees, gaining progressive responsibility in the comprehensive management of a broad and diverse oncology caseload. Training will encompass the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of neoplastic diseases, with exposure to contemporary therapeutic modalities including medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, electrochemotherapy, laser ablation, immunotherapies, and participation in clinical trials. The residency program emphasises the development of advanced clinical competence, critical thinking, and scholarly activity.
The Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia section delivers comprehensive anaesthesia care across a wide range of species, including cats, dogs, horses, ruminants, camelids, and pigs, supporting both large and small animal medicine and surgical disciplines. This allows residents to receive exceptional, hands-on training within a busy teaching hospital environment. As a resident, you will work alongside a dynamic and supportive team of specialist veterinarians, residents, and highly experienced veterinary nurses. All clinical cases are closely supervised by senior anaesthetists, ensuring a safe learning environment that encourages active participation, case-based discussion, and reflective practice. This position offers an outstanding opportunity to develop strong clinical skills and confidence in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia across diverse species.
