Veterinary Large Animal Clinicians
The University of Adelaide’s School of Animal & Veterinary Science is seeking to employ four veterinarians in our Large Animal Hospital to provide high quality primary opinion and emergency services for our equine and production/farm animal patients. An attractive and competitive remuneration package is offered including 17% superannuation. SA Veterinary Registration and Radiation License is paid by the employer.
The positions are offered at HEO7 level although new or recent graduates should expect to start at HEO6 before progressing towards HEO7. Consideration will be given for assistance with relocation +/- visa requirements for overseas applicants
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). All four positions are offered on a continuing basis and represent a wonderful pathway for veterinarians to develop their skills in a world-class facility. As a unit of the VTH, the Large Animal Hospital offers high quality first opinion and specialist referral equine and large animal veterinary services to the public. The VTH also provides a clinical training environment for final year veterinary and veterinary technology students working under the close supervision of experienced veterinary surgeons, nurses and support staff.
Working under limited direction and reporting to the Clinical Lead, you will be part of a close-knit team providing primary opinion and emergency services. As part of the emergency and after-hours roster, you will take responsibility for our in-patients and will have the opportunity to work closely with (and learn from) our team of specialists across all areas of the hospital. You will contribute to clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students by involving them in clinical case management and by providing additional learning opportunities where appropriate. Naturally, this will mean demonstrating the highest standard of clinical and professional behaviour.
Both our Large and Small Animal Hospitals are accredited by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia. As you would expect from a board-accredited hospital, our facilities and equipment are of the highest standard, with a spacious, modern, purpose-built space. Our hospital is supported by the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which is located within the same building. This is often invaluable for fast turnaround of clinical pathology reports and direct contact with pathologists for case discussion.
As part of the role, you will be a clinical mentor to students, and your high standard of clinical and professional behaviour will provide a valuable professional role model for them. Working with their enthusiasm to get involved with case management, you will help to educate the new generation of veterinarians.
The VTH provides a great environment in which to study for your own ANZCVS membership or similar. Further study and continuing professional development activities are encouraged and supported with time off and up to $3,000 per annum available to spend on your choice of CPD. Other benefits include free full access to international journals through the University Library plus VIN membership.
The VTH is located on the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus, and is surrounded by great lifestyle opportunities. We are situated on the doorstep of the Barossa Valley, an internationally renowned wine region and a delightful part of the world. We have easy access to beaches, sporting activities, benchmark schools and shopping facilities. There is easy access to the city and its many attractions. Adelaide is known as a cultural centre, with its hugely successful Festival of the Arts, and as a sports-mad destination.
To be successful you will need:
- Qualification in Veterinary Science acceptable for Veterinary registration in South Australia.
- Demonstrated veterinary experience in first opinion large animal practice will be an advantage, although not essential, and new or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated high level written communication skills, including the ability to keep detailed, accurate medical records and write professional referral letters and client correspondence.
- Ability to work proactively and productively in a team
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and experience in assisting, teaching or mentoring others.
- Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients and team members.
