
Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care Internship
About Us:
GARS is a multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital staffed 24/7 with onsite specialists in surgery, internal medicine and emergency, supported by specialists in oncology and diagnostic imaging, residents, interns, reception and nursing staff.
The GARS vision is to be Victoria’s leading referral centre. We have recruited staff with a view to achieving this goal. The hospital is brand new, purpose built, proudly independent and privately-owned. Located in Newtown Geelong, the hospital occupies a tranquil part of the city, immediately surrounded by beautiful greenspaces, overlooking the Barwon River, Balyang sanctuary and Balyang Golf course. The facility boasts its own private outdoor space with lawns overlooking the golf course and river for our staff and patients to enjoy. It is equipped with four consulting rooms, chemotherapy room, large central treatment area with adjacent nursing station and separate MRI, ultrasound/endoscopy, minimally invasive, fluoroscopy and CT suites. Three large operating theatres surround a large central sterile processing zone with separate staff offices, lecture theatre, board room, kitchen and lounge area and independent cat and dog wards. The waiting room is a beautiful space with high ceilings and separate waiting areas for dogs and cats
The hospital equipment is state of the art and includes onsite MRI, CT, Fluoroscopy, Endoscopy, Ultrasound, DR radiography, multiparameter patient monitoring, mechanical ventilators, ECG, blood gas/electrolyte, coagulation, haematology and biochemistry machines.

About the area:
GARS is very fortunate to have the Barwon River, Balyang Golf Course and Balyang Sanctuary with their natural green spaces, including bike and walking paths right on our front doorstep. The popular cafes, restaurants and bars of Pakington street and Geelong CBD are only minutes away. The outstanding wineries and distilleries of the Bellarine peninsula and beautiful beaches of the Surf Coast and famous Great Ocean Road Greater are less than 25minutes away. Transport links are excellent, with the South Geelong train station less than 3kms from the hospital, the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry and Avalon International Airport 15 and 25 minutes from the hospital. Major arterials are also close by, offering fast and easy connections to Melbourne, Victoria’s North, West and South.
Position details
- The ECC internship is designed to allow the intern to gain the confidence and necessary skills to manage a wide range of emergency and critical care cases over an 18-month period.
- It will involve day, night, weekend and public holiday shifts, with a rotating roster to allow work-life balance.
- Mentorship, training, support, and guidance is provided by a dynamic group of Specialists (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care and Diagnostic Imaging) and a supportive team of nursing staff.
- Involvement in daily hospital and ECC rounds, in-clinic tutorials and journal club.
- Mentorship and support for interns to pursue ANZCVS membership if desired.
- Continuing education support, including attendance at conferences is encouraged.
- Completion of the University of Melbourne Graduate Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care is required during the internship with the fees for this included as part of your employment package.
- Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS and external institutions.

About You
You will have the following;
- Registered as a veterinarian in Victoria.
- General practice experience is desirable but not essential, i.e. we will consider new graduates.
- Passion for delivering the highest standard of care.
- Desire to practice high level emergency and critical care.
- Eagerness to have primary case responsibility as shifts will involve both assisting the ECC specialist with cases and managing your own cases (with assistance from the ECC specialist).
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for high caseload.
- Effective time management and organisational skills.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and continuing education.

Pay and Conditions
- This is a full-time position based on a 38 hour week on a rotating roster. This will involve a combination of 10-hour and 12.5-hour shifts.
- Interns work a combination of day, afternoon and night shifts, with weekend and public holiday work also required on a shared roster.
- Annual leave, personal/carer’s leave, parental leave, compassionate leave and community service leave will accrue and be provided in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009.
- Superannuation paid additional to salary package.
- CPD allowance is 2% of base wage.
- Radiation Licence expense covered during employment.
