Residencies in Theriogenology and Equine Medicine

The School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, Charles Sturt University (CSU), is inviting applications for three year, fixed-term residency positions in Theriogenology and Equine Internal Medicine, linked to a professional doctorate, commencing in July 2025.

The positions will satisfy the credential requirements for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and American College of Theriogenologists or European College of Equine Internal Medicine and completion of the Doctor of Veterinary Studies (DVStud). The successful candidate will receive advanced clinical and research training in the relevant discipline at the Veterinary Clinical Centre (VCC), CSU, under the direct supervision of registered specialists. Additional training in related disciplines will be provided by registered specialists at the VCC and/or during external placements. The VCC has a strong caseload covering all aspects of mainly equine theriogenology, equine medicine, equine surgery, equine sports medicine, dentistry and anaesthesia.

The position will include involvement in clinic rounds, journal club and seminars. After-hours and on-call duty will be performed under the guidance of specialists. Residents participate in undergraduate student teaching, and complete a clinical research project. Training in research methods, scheduled periods to dedicate to research, thesis writing and publication mentoring are provided.

The VCC has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including advanced equipment for artificial insemination of female canids and ewes, sperm analysis and semen freezing, high-end ultrasonographic equipment, endoscopy equipment, computed tomography, digital radiography, surgical equipment, high-speed treadmill, purpose-built intensive care and isolation facilities and access to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Veterinary Pre-Clinical Centre and Equine Centre at CSU.

The successful applicant will be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent Australian resident, have a veterinary degree (preferably with honours) registrable in New South Wales and a minimum of one, but preferably two years of veterinary professional experience. A demonstrated interest in theriogenology or equine medicine, and advanced written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The successful applicant will be enrolled as a full-time student in the DVStud programme and receive a tax-free scholarship, conference attendance support, and payment for after-hours duties. Financial support is provided for the research project. An allowance for relocation is available.
