Large Animal Theriogenology – Camden

Commencement Date: 1st July 2025

This three-year, full-time program supports a resident to fulfil the credentialing requirements for specialisation in Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) through examination by the American College of Theriogenologists. The residency is supported by board-certified specialists in theriogenology with support from specialists in internal medicine, surgery, dairy health and production, sports medicine and epidemiology along with the wider support staff of the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital team. The purpose of the program is to satisfy both the minimum training requirements of the American College of Theriogenologists and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council

(AVBC) for registration as a specialist in Veterinary Reproduction.

Residents will manage cases under direct and indirect supervision and interact closely with specialists, registrars, and other residents across a range of specialty fields. A collaborative approach to learning and patient care is always encouraged. Residents will be required to participate in daily patient rounds, journal club, morbidity and mortality rounds and resident pathophysiology seminars. Residents will be expected to assist in teaching senior veterinary students through lectures, tutorials, practicals and during clinic rotations. Participation in a shared after-hours roster will be expected as part of clinical learning.

The clinical caseload focuses on primarily cattle and horses, with exposure to other less common domestic species such as small ruminants and pigs. Additional training in small animal species will be organised through formal externships and training in related disciplines. The resident will gain clinical competence in basic and advanced applied reproductive techniques which focuses on the following: equine breeding management, routine bovine reproductive procedures, semen processing and sperm cryopreservation, management of high-risk pregnancies, obstetrics (elective and emergency), dairy herd health, Assisted Reproductive Technologies (Ovum Pick-up (OPU), in-vitro fertilisation and conventional embryo recovery and transfer in cattle and horses), and reproductive surgery. Additional training opportunities in advanced reproductive techniques in specific species will be encouraged based on the successful candidate’s interests. The resident will also be able to learn and collaborate with leading researchers within the University of Sydney’s Animal Reproduction Group and embryologists within the School of Medicine.

This program requires completion of two concurrent postgraduate degrees, a research Master’s, and a Master’s by coursework. The Scholarship Package for the successful candidate includes:
