About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Wildlife Medicine, with the primary focus as a clinical academic. This position will provide excellent clinical teaching in wildlife medicine into the DVM program in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science and be involved in postgraduate training and in higher degrees by research. The appointee will advance knowledge in aspects of wildlife medicine through an active research program, supervision of HDR students, active involvement in the School’s clinical and fundamental research program and other scholarly activities.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to all aspects of teaching in wildlife medicine including planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of student learning
  • oversee the clinical teaching in the AREPH ensuring provision of appropriate assessment tasks, skills acquisition, and feedback on learning to students
  • provide a shared leadership approach to sustainability of the clinical and teaching operation with a particular focus on adequate caseload and resources
  • supervise and mentor more junior veterinary staff including postgraduate students
  • lead and contribute research programmes in a wildlife related discipline and support other research in the Faculty focused on aspects of Conservation Medicine or One Health

The position reports to the Associate Head, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, for academic matters and the Veterinary Director UVTHC for clinical standards and biosecurity issues covered under the Veterinary Practice Act NSW. Support for operational matters, including human resources, rostering, and administration, is undertaken by the Commercial and Clinical Services Director and the Hospital Manager, Camden.

The appointee will contribute to clinical activities in the sphere of wildlife medicine within the University Veterinary teaching Hospital, Camden (AREPH), and provide shared leadership within the School in wildlife medicine and related disciplines. The role will work with key stakeholders and contribute to the strategic directions of wildlife medicine under the leadership of the Associate Head Veterinary Clinical Sciences.

About you

  • a postgraduate research qualification (PhD) or is near completion, in wildlife health or a related discipline
  • a veterinary degree that is registrable in NSW possession of Fellowship of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or equivalent related to wildlife health, enabling registration as a specialist in NSW. (desirable)
  • experience in provision of clinical instruction and didactic lectures to postgraduate and undergraduate students
  • a developing track record in Wildlife Heath research and attracting research grants
  • proven experience managing, mentoring, and supervising staff.
