Animal Welfare Officer

The Animal Welfare Office (AWO) functions to support biomedical research activities at the University of Otago, with responsibility for ensuring we maintain the highest international standards pertaining to all aspects of the welfare and ethical treatment of animals. The AWO is situated in a state of the art new facility allowing close contact with technical staff and researchers.

The role

Animal Welfare Officer is a senior management role within the Operations Group, reporting directly to the Head of Health and Safety Compliance. In this role you will lead the team of highly skilled and committed animal welfare professionals to ensure the highest level of animal care at the University.

You will be responsible for the University of Otago Animal Care Programme, providing welfare and clinical care of all laboratory animals' used in teaching, testing and research activities at the University. The Animal Welfare Officer oversees and provides medical and surgical care for research animals, Principle Investigator consultation, Animal Ethics Committee protocol review and professional training for animal care personnel.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for an experienced professional passionate about animal welfare and familiar with research and teaching environment. You will also be:

  • Qualified veterinarian (NZ registration or able to register within NZ).
  • Experience with the provision of veterinary services within a research facility.
  • People management experience.
  • Excellent understanding and practical application of animal ethics legislation and related standards. Well rounded communication skills and good interpersonal skills are essential.
